Jailed in Democratic GermanyHans Schmidt
The Ordeal of An American Writer
In August 1995, Hans Schmidt, a naturalized American citizen, was about to board a plane in Frankfurt, bound for his home in Florida, after having received medical treatment in Germany. But he never got passed the German border police. The 68-year-old writer was arrested and imprisoned in the fortress-like prison of Butzow.
A German combat veteran of World War II who later emigrated to the U.S. and became an American citizen, Hans Schmidt was visiting his elderly mother in Germany in the mid-1990s when he was arrested by the ”democratic” government of Germany for having published in Florida, a German-language history newsletter questioning Zionist and Allied WWII dogma. ”Jailed in Democratic Germany” tells of his mis-treatment and imprisonment as a thought criminal in the nation of his birth.
